BASS Cancer Center, one of the leading centers for radiation therapy in California, has been designated a Center of Excellence for its use of an AlignRT® system for Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) today. This system, from Vision RT, the inventors of and leaders in SGRT technology, will particularly benefit patients suffering from cancer of the left breast, as it helps the radiotherapy team protect the heart.
Radiation therapy has been shown to be a highly effective treatment for breast cancer. However, the left breast is close to the heart, which makes the heart vulnerable to radiation exposure and cardiac complications. A study by the University of North Carolina showed that patients treated using AlignRT for breast - Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) - exhibited 0% cardiac perfusion defects six months after treatment.
The Vision RT Center of Excellence Program recognizes clinics for their exceptional expertise in the use of AlignRT for all treatment sites, as well as those that offer their patients tattoo and mark-free radiation therapy treatment. Programs designated as Centers of Excellence have also had additional training on workflows and demonstrated a high degree of skill and experience.
