Cancer is a disease that can be detected and treated early on, which gives you the best chance for success. Some types of cancers - such as those involving skin or breast tissue - may show symptoms before becoming serious; however, most cases will only become visible when they grow too large to ignore. In some rare circumstances an individual might get diagnosed incidentally during another medical procedure or routine tests done every year.
When cancer is suspected, a physical exam and medical history will help doctors determine the best course of action. Laboratory studies such as blood, urine, or stool may detect abnormalities that could indicate malignant tumors identified through imaging tests such x-rays, CT scans, magnetic resonance imagining (MRI), ultrasounds, or fiber-optic endoscopy examination. These aid in determining the location, size and future diagnosis of most cancers.
