Gynecologic cancer is any cancer that starts in women’s reproductive organs including uterus, cervix, and vulvovaginal cancers which counts about 5% of all the cancer diagnoses. Radiation therapy is used in different ways to help to treat gynecological cancer.
BASS Cancer Center is on the cutting edge of treating gynecological cancer, now offering HDR brachytherapy.
HDR Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation used to treat gynecological cancers such as endometrial and cervical cancer. Brachytherapy enables high radiation doses to tumor with rapid radiation dose fall-off to protect normal structures. Brachytherapy is an integral part of the definitive gynecological cancer treatment which improves the patients’ outcomes.
The Elekta Flexitron Remote Afterloader is used to insert a radioactive source directly into a tumor, where it stays for a short time. This form of treatment delivers a precise, localized dose of radiation while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. The Elekta Flexitron Remote Afterloader is designed to simplify and enhance High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy treatments using Iridium-192. The Flexitron system features an efficient interface, high spatial precision, and up to 40 treatment channels for the largest treatment volumes.
